A Review of the Smartphone Applications in Enhancing the Quality of English Language Teaching and Learning

This study aimed to discover the advantages and disadvantages of using smartphones in English language learning. This study was conducted by using library research. The research object was twenty articles. Data collection was twenty articles that where related to teaching and learning English by using smartphone apps. Content analysis was used to analyze the data. The results showed that the advantages of using smartphone apps in teaching and learning English were able to improve the students' English and have a positive impact on first students. Meanwhile, the disadvantages of using smartphones in teaching and learning English were classroom management and sometimes. In which the class became noisy because the students played the smartphone English loudly, and it was hard to stop them from using the smartphone. The second was needing large classes because smartphones are a challenge and competition; therefore, to play, smartphones need enough space

Apology Strategies Expressed by Characters in The Curious Case of Benjamin Button Movie

The purpose of this study was to know what apology strategy is used by characters in “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button movie.” The method of this study was the Qualitative Approach; This study focused on the analysis or interpretation of the written material in context. The subject of this study was apology utterances spoken by the characters in the movie. The results of data analysis showed that the apology strategies that are used in “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button movie” are indirect apology, evasive strategies, expressing concern, direct apology and explanation or account with functions expression of lack of intent, implicit acknowledgment, querying precondition, expressing concern for the listener, request for forgiveness, expression of regret, explicit explanation

AN ANALYSIS OF STUDENTS’ ABILITY IN DISTINGUISHING AND PRONOUNCING LABIODENTAL SOUNDS

The purpose of this study was to find out the extent of the fifth-semester students in the academic year of 2022/2023 at STKIP Muhammadiyah Aceh Barat Daya in pronouncing fricatives labiodental sounds, which divided into two, namely /f/ sound and /v/ sound. The research design used in this study was descriptive from a quantitative approach. 57 fifth-semester students of the English Education Department were selected as a sample using purposive sampling. A pronunciation test was used to collect the data. The collected data was analyzed and processed by using descriptive statistics using SPSS 16.0. Based on the findings of this study, the researcher came to a conclusion that in contrast to their proficiency in pronouncing the sound /f/, fifth-semester students at STKIP Muhammadiyah Aceh Barat Daya academic year of 2022/2023 were still unable to pronounce the sound /v/ correctly. It was proven that the mean score of /f/ sound was higher than the mean score of /v/ sound. The mean score of /f/ sound was 55.18, while the mean score of /v/ sound was 28.33

Code-Switching Towards EFL Students’ Written Feedback

While the pros and cons of Code-Switching (CS) in teaching English instruction have been discussed and reported among English as a Second Language (ESL) and English as a Foreign Language (EFL) students, there is limited empirical evidence addressing the utility of CS in writing courses, particularly in providing written feedback for EFL students by teachers. To fill this void, this article reports on a narrative case study that investigates the types of CS that EFL students want to receive in their written feedback and their preferences for CS in terms of local errors and global errors. Seventeen college students at Indonesia Open University, who voluntarily participated in this study by taking English general and writing courses, were included. A qualitative data analysis approach was employed through an online questionnaire, and five students were chosen for online interviews. The findings revealed that most students prefer their lecturers to use a combination of languages (English and Bahasa Indonesia) when providing written feedback. Regardless of local or global errors, the students expressed a preference for a combination of languages. Moreover, more than half of the students favored the tag-switching type of feedback provided by the lecturer. In brief, CS can be implemented as a strategy for providing written feedback, but consideration must be given to students' needs, proficiency levels, and the frequency with which the lecturer uses CS

Investigate the Effect of Quizizz in Teaching Vocabulary

This study examined (1) the use of Quizizz in teaching vocabulary for a public high school in the South West region of Aceh, Indonesia and (2) to figure out the students’ perception toward Quizizz. This study used mixed methods, quantitative and qualitative in nature. In this intervention, 20 junior high school students were involved in this study. The data for this study was obtained by gathering information from pre and post-tests and classroom observation. After analysing the data quantitatively and qualitatively, the results indicated that Quizizz could be one of effective teaching tools that motivates students to learn vocabulary in an enjoyable way, especially for the game settings which provide the leader board and question timer. In addition, the students showed a positive attitude toward the application of Quizizz even though the internet connection and the computers were obstacles for the teacher and students

An Analysis of English Final Examination Test Items at The Seventh Grade of SMP Negeri 1 Blangpidie

The aims of this study are to analyze the difficulty level, discrimination index, validity, reliability of English final examination test items of grade VII in semester 2 of SMP Negeri 1 Blangpidie in the academic year of 2014-2015. The writer used a descriptive quantitative method. The research subject of this study is the regular class of seventh grade students which consists of 60 members. The data were collected through document analysis. Based on the result of analyzing data, the difficulty level is at mean 0.21 classified as difficult. Afterwards, the discrimination index is at mean 0.15 classified as poor. Then, validity is at mean 0.348 belongs to low validity. And then, reliability is at mean 0.128 and categorized as low reliability. In other words, based on the analyzed data by using the difficulty level, discrimination index, validity and reliability the test items of English final examination in semester 2 of SMP Negeri 1 Blangpidie at academic year of 2014/2015 in the class VII categorized difficult, not able to distinguish between high and low students achievement, not yet considered as valid and reliable test items
